George Guryanov

1961 — 2013

model.author.description

Georgy Guryanov is a key figure of the St. Petersburg art scene at the turn of the 21st century-a member of the New artists group, a drummer of the Kino group, a vocalist of the Kuryokhin Pop mechanics ,a Professor at the New Academy. Strict aesthetic principles apply to all areas of Guryanov's work and to his lifestyle. Having started his artistic activity in the early eighties of the last century as one of the participants of the youth fun and "wild" group "New artists" Guryanov soon, without leaving painting, becomes the permanent drummer of the group "Cinema". At this time, Guryanov actively participates in the activities of the legendary friends of Mayakovsky club, an unofficial Association of young artists, poets, musicians, art historians, collectors and fashion designers. After the termination of the Kino group, the main occupation of Georgy Guryanov again becomes fine art. At this time, he headed the painting Department of the New Academy of Fine Arts, founded by Timur Novikov, and became one of the main figures of St. Petersburg neo-academism. The Central theme of Guryanov's art is the celebration of masculinity and beauty, the most important manifestations of which the artist considered architecture, sports, labor, the army and Navy. The image that runs through all his work is a strong, athletic, beautiful man-a sailor, a worker, a pilot, an athlete. In Guryanov's works, the images of the 30s created by Rodchenko, Riefenstahl, and Rohm appear freed from any ideology other than the power of aestheticism. Guryanov makes images of athletes and sailors almost self-portraits, which " erases the imprint of the "class mass" from them, replacing the passion of the crowd with his personal narcissism" (D. Cameron). The style of Guryanov's paintings combines the influence of classicism, the traditions of the best representatives of the Soviet school of painting (Deineka, Samokhvalov, Zhilinsky) and the lightness of St. Petersburg neo-academism.
